University information days at Campus Suderburg (Germany)

How is wastewater turned back into drinking water? What is the "transparent customer"? And where can I work later if I study social work? Pupils were able to find out this and more on Thursday, November 16, at the "Studying under the magnifying glass" event at the Ostfalia site in Suderburg.

The annual university information days "Studying under the magnifying glass", which take place at all four Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences locations, offer school pupils the opportunity to get a very personal impression of what studying is all about with campus and laboratory tours, course presentations and taster lectures. Many school classes took the opportunity to get to know the Suderburg campus and what it has to offer even better. The faculties of Commerce and Social Work as well as Construction-Water-Soil presented their six Bachelor's degree courses and gave an insight into university life. There were also additional offers from the Central Student Advisory Service, the Language Center and Learning Coaching to answer individual questions about studying, admission requirements or student financing.

Six Erasmus students from Portugal, who are currently studying at the Suderburg campus, took part in the supporting program with an information stand and were thus able to report personally on their experiences during their stay abroad.

Luís Barros, who has been studying in Suderburg since summer 2022 and thus stayed longer than just one semester, now has his Bachelor's degree in his pocket. Barros already considered Suderburg to be a suitable place to study during the application process for a scholarship abroad, as he saw the three other university locations of Salzgitter, Wolfsburg and Wolfenbüttel as not far away and therefore an advantage for further collaboration. He also sees the proximity to the Port of Hamburg as an opportunity for his future career prospects, whereby he will remain at Ostfalia University as a research assistant for the next few years thanks to new research projects: "It was my goal to be able to continue working here at Ostfalia University and I am delighted with the contacts I made, which made my Erasmus stay so uncomplicated. I can only recommend everyone to spend at least one semester at an international partner university. It's worth it!"

International Week in Sétubal (Portugal)

From 26 to 30 June 2023, the Ostfalia-Team (Helge Hannaske and Luís Barros), led by Internationalization-Officer Jürgen Böse, took part in the 13th International Week of the Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (IPS) in Portugal. As part of the International Week, the topic "Bring the Future to Academia" was discussed together with other colleges and universities from several European countries.

In addition to various current topics in the European academic world, future trends were discussed by the colleges and universities present at the event, such as

  • How is the use of AI software assessed in the different member states?
  • To what extent does this influence everyday life and knowledge assessment at universities?
  • What practical approaches are already being used successfully to integrate this new technology into university research and teaching?

As part of the good bilateral relations, the IPS and Ostfalia University / Suderburg Campus have agreed on the next steps in their cooperation. In the short term, this will result in the exchange of students between the universities in both directions (winter semester 2023: Four Portuguese students will come to the Suderburg campus and two German students will go to the IPS). In the long term, joint lecture events are planned as well as the completion of cooperative theses.

International Research Week in Wernigerode (Germany)

In order to further develop international cooperation activities, the Internationalization Officer Prof. Dr. Jürgen Böse and Luís Barros from the Faculty of Trade and Social Work took part in the International Research Week of the Harz University of Applied Sciences in Wernigerode between 2 and 5 May 2023. During the research week, the Ostfalia team had the opportunity to discuss several exciting topics related to research in the academic environment. Among others, the future of researchers on a European level could be debated, as Ms. Helene-Olesja Betuch mentioned in her session on "Current developments in research and higher education on a European level".

There was also an exchange with other universities from countries such as Denmark, Portugal, the Netherlands and Spain regarding new ideas for a possible international partnership in research and teaching. In particular, work was carried out with the IPS partner from Setúbal (Portugal) on new concepts that are applicable to the academic reality of both countries and broaden the horizon of institutional relations between the two universities.
